Dear DOS Gamers!

The heat is currently roasting Austria, and here in Vienna we’re experiencing temperatures that are well beyond reasonable. A nice cold beer certainly doesn’t hurt when it comes to cooling a thirsty throat — no pun intended, Ottakringer.

A shady beer garden would be one option, if it weren’t for that annoying waiter lurking around with his shameless demand for a tip. To avoid this highway robbery, we could simply buy our beer at the supermarket — or go one step further and brew our own stuff.

Of course, things aren’t quite that simple in reality. Luckily, there is software such as Metersteiner Beer Manager, released 29 years ago by a software company with the wonderfully fitting name El Dorado Software. The game lets us build and manage our very own beer empire. It’s actually a pretty cool little business simulation.

Unfortunately, in 2026 there isn’t much left of El Dorado Software. Well, almost nothing. A shareware version of the game is still available, but it gives us just five years to build our empire before time runs out. The full version, unfortunately, is no longer available.

Reddit user ryanrudolf brought this to our attention, and since we’re always happy to take on interesting requests, we decided to have a closer look at the game.

The result is a loader that removes the five-year limit as well as the nag screens. In addition, we created a savegame editor that makes it easy to give your bank balance a little boost (doesn´t work in real life either unfortunately).

With these changes, the game can be played with the same functionality that was advertised for the now-lost full version.
