One Step Beyond comes from an era when unusual control schemes were part of the DOS experience. On older titles like this, the original keyboard layout can feel awkward today, even when the game itself still has plenty to offer. We therefore treat this release as a focused control fix: it keeps the classic version intact while making the game noticeably easier to handle.
We improved the keyboard controls directly in the executable, so no external key mapper or TSR is needed. The original keys still work, but our fix also adds arrow-key movement, including diagonal movement by pressing two directions at once. Action, fire, and menu functions remain available as expected. Our release is intended for owners of the original game or the original game files, and it prepares the well-known OCEAN version for more comfortable play on modern hardware.
