Centaur was developed by Victor Vikhrev and released for DOS.
Centaur is a DOS chess program that appeared in several known full versions and used different protection schemes across releases. For our page, we focus on the supported original builds that the loader detects automatically. This lets us start the correct version reliably without altering the game itself. English v3.0 is already unprotected, while the Russian and English v2.0 builds still include a documentation-based protection check.
Our release only adds the required DOS loader to the game directory and checks which build is present when you launch it. For Centaur v2.0, the protection check can be bypassed with F1, so the original move or code entry is no longer needed; for v3.0, Centaur is simply identified and started directly. The loader also validates the expected patch locations and rejects unknown or modified builds. The original game files are not included, so this release is intended for owners of the original game or the existing game files.
